Peace Committee
The Peace Committee of the Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club meets once a month by Zoom, on the 3rd Thursday. We welcome your participation! Please contact Ann Schwartz (schwartzav@gmail.com) or Jack Kurzweil (jack.kurzweil@gmail.com) for more information.
We organize and advocate for a new approach to US foreign policy, based on mutual respect rather than military domination. Our projects have included:
Seeking to reduce the Pentagon Budget and making the Department of Defense accountable to Congress and the American people
Organizing for an immediate Ceasefire in Gaza and opposing further shipments of weapons to the right wing government of Israel
Repealing the Authorization of the Use of Military Force (AUMF) which - granted to President Bush in 2001, in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center - gives the President of the United States wide powers to deploy and engage US military forces, circumventing the Constitutional provision that reserves the right to declare war to Congress
Pressuring the United States government to reengage the process of limiting and reducing the worldwide store of nuclear weapons as well as using diplomatic methods to prevent additional nations from acquiring or deploying these weapons
Working to end the economic and political blockades that the United States has placed on Cuba and Venezuela
The committee undertakes these actions by:
Hosting online seminars on crucial foreign policy issues
Introducing resolutions on these issues for consideration by the Wellstone Club and promoting their adoption by local government bodies as well as the local and state Democratic Party
Joining local coalitions that seek to advance these issues
Encouraging Wellstone members to participate in public demonstrations on these issues
